Synopsis
In a deep forest in ancient Egypt, Prince Tamino is being chased by a giant serpent and faints. He is rescued by the Queen of the Night's attendants and meets the Queen of the Night. The Queen of the Night gives him a portrait of her daughter, Princess Pamina. Upon seeing Pamina's portrait, Tamino falls in love at first sight. The Queen of the Night asks him to rescue Pamina, who is captured in the temple of her enemy, Sarastro. She promises that if Tamino rescues Pamina, she will allow them to marry. The Queen of the Night also gifts Tamino a magic flute that can overcome any trial. Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno set out together to rescue Pamina...
Concept
I directed The Magic Flute in collaboration with a sand artist and a narrator. They both helped the audience to understand the performance. The sand artist created images in sand on a glass plate and the images were projected live onto a screen. During the performance, she created live images in time with the orchestra. I decided to use sand art instead of a stage set. The advantages are that it is eco-friendly, transitions are flexible and it is easy to modify. I also did the stage lighting design. It was an opera for the whole family, including young children, so I used lots of bright colours in the lighting. The sand art, the costumes and the light all worked together to create harmony.
I also adapted the script to make it suitable for the whole family. We made the program books, especially for children with colouring sections and stickers. During the performance we had a quiz with prizes like flutes. The audience really enjoyed all these events.
