synopsis
King Nabucco of Babylonia attacks the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, and the nephew of the king of Jerusalem, Ismaele, falls in love with Nabucco's second daughter, Princess Fenena. Nabucco orders the temple to be insulted and set on fire. The priests of Babylon persuade Nabucco's eldest daughter, Abigaille, to spread the rumour that Nabucco has died and plan to kill Fenena. When Nabucco returns and commands everyone to worship him as a god, lightning suddenly strikes him, causing him to lose consciousness. Seizing the opportunity, Abigaille takes the fallen crown and places it on her head. Despite Nabucco's pleas to spare Fenena, Abigaille imprisons Nabucco. Nabucco praises the great God of the Jews, and Abigaille, having consumed poison, begs forgiveness from Fenena before taking her last breath.
