Synopsis
Rigoletto is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi, centred around Rigoletto, the jester of the Duke of Mantua. The dissolute Duke seduces many women, and Rigoletto mocks him, inciting the anger of the nobles. The Duke sets his sights on Gilda, Rigoletto's daughter, whom Rigoletto tries to protect. However, the nobles mistakenly believe Gilda is Rigoletto's lover and kidnap her, delivering her to the Duke. Determined to seek revenge, Rigoletto hires the assassin Sparafucile to kill the Duke. But Sparafucile's sister, Maddalena, falls for the Duke and persuades her brother to kill the first person who enters the inn instead. Learning of the plan, Gilda sacrifices herself for her father and is murdered by Sparafucile. When Rigoletto receives the body bag, he discovers his daughter's death and realizes the fulfilment of Monterone's curse, plunging him into despair. This opera deals with a tragic fate and paternal love.
This production offers a new perspective on Rigoletto by involving the cast and audience in a mock trial setting.
Costume Design Concept
I was the costume designer for Rigoletto. I wanted to express the emotion of each character through the costumes. The costumes were expressed by using lines.
The character of Rigoletto is complex. Of course, everyone is complex but I felt that Rigoletto has the most complex character in the opera. For him, I used purple and lime colours. The fluorescent lime represents a life of splendor and purple symbolizes sin. I could imagine him while I was painting it.
Gilda is a pure and obedient girl and she is honest about love. So, I expressed her character through straight lines. Mantova’s character should not be crossed, so I expressed him by using checker lines. For Maddalena I used a snake motif and Sparafucile has a simple but complex psychology so I used a complex pattern in his costume.
