Spring Spring

Synopsis

"Spring Spring" is an opera based on the novel by the same name, by the Korean author Kim Yu-jeong. The story is a delightful and honest depiction of rural life, centring on the conflicts and comedic situations between Old Man Oh, his daughter Suni, and Gilbo, who wishes to marry Suni.

The story begins in a small rural village. Old Man Oh has promised his daughter Suni's hand in marriage to Gilbo. However, Old Man Oh keeps delaying the wedding, using Gilbo for more labour around the farm. Gilbo believes in Old Man Oh's promise and works diligently, but Old Man Oh continues to postpone the wedding date. Suni loves Gilbo, but she has to follow her father's plans. As time goes on, Gilbo becomes increasingly anxious and frustrated with Old Man Oh's stalling.

Once again, Old Man Oh comes up with more excuses to delay the wedding, which angers Gilbo, leading to a confrontation between the two. Ultimately, with the mediation of the villagers, Old Man Oh agrees to let Suni and Gilbo get married. As preparations for the wedding are in full swing, Suni and Gilbo look forward to their future together and are happy.

The opera portrays the traditions and lives of people in a rural Korean village with humour and warmth, conveying themes of love, patience, and the importance of family. "Spring Spring" offers audiences a touching and enjoyable experience.

SYNOPSIS

"Dongseung(The Little Monk)" is an opera based on a story by Korean writer Kim Dong-ni, exploring themes of innocence, spirituality, and identity.

Act 1:
The young novice monk Donyeom lives in a remote Buddhist temple, struggling with monastic life and missing his mother.

Act 2:
Donyeom befriends Jeongsim, a girl seeking refuge at the temple, which makes him question his life as a monk. The abbot and monks notice the growing bond, causing tension.

Act 3:
Inspired by a visiting woodcutter's stories, Donyeom decides to leave the temple to find his mother and discover his true self.

Epilogue:
Donyeom's departure symbolises a universal quest for identity and belonging, as the monks and villagers watch with mixed emotions.

The opera portrays a young boy's struggle between spiritual duties and personal desires in the serene yet challenging life of a Buddhist monastery.
